Shelf Styling Tips

Here are a few simple Shelf Styling tips from an interior designer

Shelf styling can feel intimidating but I promise it is really quite simple! There are a few staple pieces that I love to use when styling. I’m going to give you a quick run down of what decorative objects use and how to style those pieces.

Layer With Odd Numbers!

I typically like to group things in threes (or in odd numbers!). Layering objects in odd numbers that are different heights feels less forced than arranging even-numbered pieces of equal heights in sets. We want a natural, effortless look!

Books Books and more Books

There are so many different ways to style books. You can lean, layer and stack them! I love thrifting old books and flipping them backwards to add some texture and some neutral earth-tones to my shelves.

You can have some books stacked vertically and use more books stacked horizontally to act as book ends. And I love to add decorative sculptures or display bowls and botanicals on top of my books!

And don’t be afraid to think outside of the box with your book ends! I used this gorgeous, decorative brass box from this set to act as a book end on the shelves of the cabinet in my bathroom!

Layer and Lean Art & Frames

Lean and layer a combination of abstract and traditional art for a timeless, curated feel. And of course, frame and add some of your favorite family photos to the mix as well! I love to layer art with other art and also with vases and decorative objects to support and hold the art in place.

Add Baskets and Boxes

When I add baskets, I typically like to use larger ones towards the bottom to help ensure that your shelving won’t look too cluttered. This also helps anchor your whole arrangement.

Baskets and boxes can also help your shelving serve a purpose. These wooden boxes that I have stacked on my bathroom shelves are perfect for storing various toiletries. And I love this metal first aid box that I use to store medication and first aid items!

Bowls & Vases

I love incorporating bowls and vases into my shelf styling. I tend to lean towards muted earth tones, wood, brass, and pieces with a little bit of texture when selecting vases and bowls. You can layer them with one another with varying heights, stack them on top of books or layer in front of artwork. Pop a sprig of greenery in your vases and add some beaded garland to your bowls!
